![]() Téllez and another conquistador established feudal estates.īy 1560, Pachuca de Soto-as the city was called then-had quickly tripled in size to a population of 2,200 due to the opportunities in employment in the burgeoning mining industry. In 1528, a Spanish artilleryman named Francisco Téllez killed the standing Aztec governor Ixcóatl. During their conquest, the Aztec established a governing center where Plaza Juarez in Pachuca City now stands. Over 200 years later, between 14, the Aztec Empire overran the Chichimecas. Between 11, the Chichimecas built fortifications to keep out the Otomis which they had previously pushed from the nearby Mezquital Valley. It is during this period that we see the first structure built where the modern-day city of Pachuca now lies. They called the area surrounding their capital Pachuca Njunthé. As this influence faded, the Chichimecas came to dominate the region. – Precolumbian history of Pachuca –īetween 200 CE and 800 CE, platforms and figurines in areas near the modern-day city of Pachuca show Teotihuacano influence. Around 2,000 BCE, these nomadic groups began to settle in the region, forming an ancient pre-Hispanic hub of obsidian fabrication in present-day San Bartolo-about 100 kilometers from the modern-day city of Pachuca. Archaeologists have found scraping tools, arrowheads, and mammoth remains that point to human settlement existing in this region for thousands of years.Īrchaeological evidence indicates that human beings were first drawn to the region for its deposits of green obsidian. In the Sierra de Pachuca and nearby mountains, evidence of human habitation can be found as early as 12,000 BCE. ![]() It is recognized both for its deep historical significance in Mexican history and for its contribution to the landscape of Mexico’s industrial growth through the extraction of its rich mineral deposits. The city of Pachuca has a population of 277,375. At an elevation of 2,432 meters (8000 feet) above sea level, it is one of the highest cities in Mexico-the 5th highest city in Mexico, and 42nd in the world. The largest city and capital of the Mexican state of Hidalgo, Pachuca is located in a canyon valley about 50 miles north of Mexico City. ![]()
